Manufacturing, Labs and Office Facilities Expansion

Patheon Inc.

Patheon required the permanent relocation of existing facilities to their Whitby operations in order to accommodate internal infrastructure changes as well as an upcoming production contract. NXL was engaged to design and manage the addition and renovation of over 8,000 sf of clean Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) production space, 6,000 sf of laboratories, and 6,600 sf of offices. Additionally, there were renovations to existing offices to increase density, alterations to existing loading docks, and renovation of existing equipment rooms for additional roof-top equipment.

The project was undertaken on a fast-track 13-month schedule to ensure that the facility would be ready to meet the start date for new production. To accommodate the schedule and on-going operations, the project required extensive phasing. Demolition and connections to existing services were done during scheduled production shut-downs and temporary seals on existing laboratory, office and clean GMP functions were undertaken so construction could occur while operations continued in the existing spaces.

The final project included clean GMP manufacturing areas, research and development laboratories with seven 8 ft fumehood, areas for solvent storage and a weigh-and-balance room.
