Chemistry / Biology Laboratories
University of British Columbia
NXL Architects acted as consulting laboratory architects for this new 6-storey research facility. The laboratory portion of the project totalled 34,000 sf. and included research and teaching facilities for heavy industrial processes, as well as a Clean Energy Research Centre focused on hydrogen research. The design featured wet and dry labs, a cold room, and environmental chamber, and labs with high-head-room for housing large specialized equipment.
NXL’s mandate was developed directly with UBC Properties Trust, and then assigned to the design architects. NXL was sought by the University to advise their design team on the technical issues, and interpret the needs of the users. As consulting laboratory architect, NXL reviewed the programming documents, recommended location and design principles to the lead architects, prepared specifications for fume hoods, provided technical reviews and advice on equipment and code issues, and participated in 27 separate value engineering exercises to bring the project in line with the budget.
Bunting Coady Architects and Diamond and Schmitt Architects, Architects-in-Joint-Venture were the lead architects for this project.
