The Challenge:
NXL’s first mandate with Torcan Chemical Ltd was to develop a 110,000 sf, 10-year masterplan for Torcan’s existing Aurora, Ontario site. NXL then worked with Torcan to implement phase 1 and phase 2 of the masterplan.
Achieving a Successful Outcome:
We successfully implemented Torcan’s masterplan in 2 separate phases over 10 years, without deviating from the original vision.
- Phase 1 added 11,000 sf of laboratories, laboratory support spaces and a mechanical penthouse. The project included four new segregated labs with six fume hood workstations, a bank of walk-in fume hoods, segregated write-up areas, solvent storage, and extensive safety systems.
- Phase 2 began five years later and included 9,500 sf of kilo labs, a 7,000 sf administrative expansion, and upgrades to mechanical and electrical services throughout the facility – all in conformance with the original masterplan.
- The labs provided open, bright workspaces full of natural light for chemists that had previously been working in dark enclosed spaces. Productivity, safety and user satisfaction was markedly increased.
